Translation Strategies in the Subtitle of the Women Talking Movie: A Gottlieb’s Translation Theory
Abstract
The objectives of this study were: 1) to identify and describe the translation strategies applied in the subtitles of the Women Talking movie, and 2) to find out the most commonly used translation strategy in the movie’s subtitles. This study was based on Gottlieb’s classification of translation strategies for movie subtitles, which included Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Transcription, Dislocation, Condensation, Decimation, Deletion, and Resignation. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze the use of Gottlieb’s translation strategies in the Indonesian subtitles of the Women Talking movie. The sources of the data were the original English scripts or dialogues from the movie and the Indonesian subtitles written by Pain Akatsuki on Subscene. The data collection was conducted using a documentation method. The research findings indicated that eight translation strategies were used in the movie: Expansion (5.00%), Paraphrase (16.67%), Transfer (53.33%), Imitation (5.67%), Condensation (10.00%), Decimation (4.00%), Deletion (5.00%), and Resignation (0.33%). Among these, Transfer was identified as the most frequently applied strategy in the subtitles of the Women Talking movie.
