Infrastructure and Investment Challenges in Accelerating the Adoption of Electric Vehicles as a Substitute for Fuel
Abstract
Accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles as a substitute for petroleum fuels (BBM) is a strategic step in supporting the energy transition and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, its implementation still faces various challenges, particularly in infrastructure and investment. This study aims to analyze the limitations of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the challenges of investment and high initial costs, as well as the development prospects and strategies for accelerating adoption. The study results indicate that limited charging infrastructure is a major obstacle to increasing electric vehicle use. The uneven distribution of charging stations, especially outside urban areas, raises concerns among users regarding the availability of energy access. Furthermore, the relatively longer charging time compared to conventional fueling also affects the level of comfort and efficiency of using electric vehicles in daily activities. From an investment perspective, developing an electric vehicle ecosystem requires significant costs, including for the construction of charging infrastructure, increasing electricity grid capacity, and developing battery technology. The relatively high price of electric vehicles compared to fuel-based vehicles also hinders public adoption of this technology. Limited access to financing and high investment risks also affect investor interest in supporting the development of this sector. Nevertheless, the prospects for electric vehicle development remain promising. Advances in increasingly efficient and affordable battery technology, along with growing public awareness of environmental issues, are key driving factors. Strategies to accelerate adoption can be implemented through synergy between the government and the private sector, such as providing fiscal incentives, integrated infrastructure development, and innovation in technology and business models. Therefore, despite various challenges, electric vehicles have significant potential to be a solution to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support sustainable development. Comprehensive and sustainable policies are needed to ensure the acceleration of electric vehicle adoption is effective and inclusive.
