Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of the “Sandwich Generation” in the Indonesian drama film “Home Sweet Loan” (2024), a social phenomenon that refers to individuals who bear a double burden, namely caring for and financially supporting their parents and younger family members. This phenomenon, first coined by Dorothy A. Miller in 1981, is increasingly relevant in Indonesia, where millions of people fall into this category. The film “Home Sweet Loan” was chosen as the object of study because it implicitly reflects the challenges and realities faced by the Sandwich Generation, including complex financial management and pressure from various family members. Using Kress and Van Leeuwen's social semiotics approach, this qualitative research examines how the meaning of the Sandwich Generation is constructed through the interaction of various semiotic modes. The analysis focuses on visual elements (composition, color), linguistic elements (dialogue, language style), audio elements (music, intonation), gestural elements (expression, body movement), and spatial elements (spatial arrangement). Through this multimodal exploration, the study aims to uncover the complexity of the burdens, conflicts, and aspirations of the Sandwich Generation as visualized and communicated in the film's narrative.
