Building Public Awareness of the Dangers of Human Trafficking Crimes to Protect Vulnerable Groups
Abstract
Human trafficking remains a serious threat to humanity, where women, children, and low-income communities are the most vulnerable groups to exploitation. Repressive law enforcement alone has proven insufficient to stop the escalation of this crime if it is not accompanied by preventive efforts at the grassroots level. In the chain of this crime, human trafficking syndicates consistently target the most vulnerable groups, namely women, children, and low-income populations. This article aims to examine the urgency and strategies of building public awareness as the primary shield in protecting vulnerable groups from human trafficking. This research uses a normative juridical method with a literature review approach. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The findings show that low literacy levels, economic pressure, and lack of public knowledge regarding the modus operandi of human trafficking are the main gaps exploited by criminal syndicates. Therefore, building public awareness through structured educational campaigns, involvement of community and religious leaders, and optimization of digital media constitutes the most effective preventive strategy. High public awareness will create an early warning system within society to prevent human trafficking from the upstream level.
