Understanding the Various Modes of Human Trafficking That Frequently Ensnare Women and Children in the Digital Era

Abstract

The advancement of technology and the digital era has facilitated unprecedented access to information. At the same time, however, it has created new centers of vulnerability in the form of cybercrime, one of which is Human Trafficking. Criminal syndicates now exploit the internet and social media as primary tools to identify, recruit, deceive, and exploit victims. Women and children constitute the groups that are disproportionately affected by this crime. This article aims to identify and analyze the various modes of operation of human trafficking that have evolved within the digital environment and to formulate appropriate countermeasures. This study employs a normative juridical research method with a library research approach and is analyzed using descriptivequalitative techniques. The findings indicate that contemporary trafficking methods in the digital era primarily revolve around cyber grooming, online job scams, sexual exploitation through live-streaming platforms, and romance scams (love scamming). The anonymity of perpetrators and crossborder jurisdictional complexities constitute the most significant challenges to law enforcement. Therefore, strengthening family-based digital literacy, implementing proactive cyber patrols, and harmonizing national and international legal instruments are essential measures to protect women and children from trafficking and exploitation.
