Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a rare clinical condition affecting the nasal mucosa. It is characterized by progressive nasal congestion and thick-bothersome nasal secretions. Atrophic rhinitis can be classified into two types, that is, a primary or idiopathic type where the etiology is not known and a secondary type where the disease develops secondary to some other primary disease Primary atrophic rhinitis is often called ozaena, which is merely the descriptive Greek term meaning “stench” (strong unpleasant odor). AR sometimes referred as acute necrotizing rhinitis, atrophic rhinitis, catarrhal atrophic rhinitis, coryza foetida. ATR mostly occurs in women with ratio of 6:1.5. It is common in tropical countries and is more common in low socioeconomic status with poor hygiene. However, nothing has been proven to be the direct cause. AR is basically diagnosed based on the presence of triad symptoms namely fetor, greenish crusts, and wide nasal cavity, usually seen in major cases at advanced stages. In this case series we provide 2 rare cases of atrophic rhinitis with different characteristics and risk factors.
