The Effect of Ethanolic Extract From Meniran Leaves on Histopathological Features of Kidney and Liver in Rats Exposed to Oral Formaldehyde

Introduction: Formaldehyde (FA) metabolism in the body causes reduced glutathione leading to liver and kidney damage. Meniran has been shown to have a hepatoprotective activity. However, the effect of the administration of meniran on the histological features of the liver and kidney exposed to formaldehyde has not been well studied.

Objective: This study was aimed to determine the effect of meniran on the histopathological feature of liver and kidney cell.

Methods: This was a posttest randomized control group design. A total of 24 male wistar rats were divided into 4 groups of 6 rats each. Group 1 is a was control group receiving oral formalin only. Group 2 received meniran extract at dose of 100 mg/kg BW and oral formalin, group 3 received meniran at dose of 200 mg/kg BW and oral formaldehyde, group 4 received meniran extract 300 mg /kg BW and oral formaldehyde. The treatment was given for 15 days. The histopathological changes of the kidneys and liver were assesed using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The data obtained were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test using SPSS 22.0.

Results: The mean of kidney and liver damage in the meniran group at various doses was lower than that of   control group. There was a significant difference in the mean of kidney damage between the control group and the meniran group at various doses (p=0.008). The mean histopathological score of liver damage showed a significant difference between the control group with various treatments (p=0.000).

Conclusion: Phyllanthus niruni ameliorates liver and kidney damage
