Men Love Other Suffer More Than Women: Investigating Envy and Schadenfreude

Abstract


Schadenfreude merupakan perasaan bahagia atas kemalangan orang lain dan berpotensi menimbulkan konflik dalam relasi sosial. Schadenfreude sebagai suatu emosi terjadi karena faktor perasaan iri (envy) dan faktor demografi seperti jenis kelamin. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meninjau pengaruh iri dan jenis kelamin terhadap schadenfreude pada mahasiswa.  Subjek penelitian yang terlibat sebanyak 70 orang yang kemudian dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol berdasarkan jenis kelamin. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, rasa iri (envy) berpengaruh positif secara signifikan terhadap tingkat schadenfreude pada partisipan yang ditunjukkan dengan besaran nilai F (1,66) = 73,5, p = <0.001, η²p = 0.527. Hasil lainnya adalah tidak ditemukannya pengaruh signifikan interaksi jenis kelamin yang berbeda terhadap tingkat schadenfreude, namun subjek laki-laki memiliki rata-rata tingkat schadenfreude yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan perempuan yang ditunjukkan dengan nilai F (1, 66) = 17.4, p = <0.001, η²p = 0.209. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa perasaan iri (envy) yang tinggi berkontribusi pada peningkatan schadenfreude pada partisipan.
