Abstract

Dental pulp can identify the existence of injury by inflammatory process, played by neutrophil cells. Caries removing procedures can pose a risk of opening the roof pulp chamber. This condition can be treated with pulp capping using Ca(OH)2, MTA, and Biodentine medicaments. The aim of this study was to analyze differences neutrophil cell counts in dental pulp Wistar rats after application of pulp capping medicaments.

The subjects on this study were 24 male Wistar rats divided into four groups consist of 6 rats each.  Group I (negative control), group II (MTA), group III (Biodentine), and group IV (Ca(OH)2). Medicaments applied shortly after preparation. Samples were taken on day fourth after treatment. The teeth were decalcified then stained using Hematoxylin and Eosin to observe neutrophil cell counts.

The data have been analyzed using statistical Kruskal-Wallis tests. The mean neutrophil cell counts in the control group I was higher than groups II, III, and IV. Neutrophil cell counst in group II with group III, and the group I with group IV showed no significant difference (p> 0.05). The application of three pulp capping medicaments shows the difference of neutrophil cells count with least number of neutrophil cells in group III.
